In a review, Greimas contrasts structural linguistics with its predecessor, historical linguistics. He describes the newcomer as "a linguistics of perception, not of expression" ("La Linguistique statistique et la linguistique structurale" 57). He goes on to examine the import of cybernetics for structural linguistics. Throughout the review he stresses that for linguists of his generation the shift was arduous.
