Introduction to Humanities Computing

Group Work Guidelines

These guidelines are to help your group organize itself and complete the assignment. If you prefer to work in a different fashion feel free to ignore them.

First Meeting

It is important to meet and plan how you are going to work together and complete the assignment. At your first meeting you should do the following:

1.1 Decide what discipline or area you are going to concentrate on.

1.2 Decide how you are going to research the use of computers in your chosen field.

1.3 Assign roles so that you each know what you are doing.

1.4 Pick further meeting times.

Final Meeting

It is useful to have a final meeting before you hand in the assignment at which you all make sure that the submission is something you are comfortable. At that meeting you should make sure of the following:

2.1 That you have a backup of the file.

2.2 That someone is in charge of submitting the assignment file. The submission should clearly indicate who was in the group and what the field was that you were concentrating on.

2.3 That all of you understand the need to submit your group involvement forms. (The form is to be found below. A copy is to be filled out by each individual and submitted personally.)

Roles

One way to divide the work is to assign roles so that each person knows what they are responsible for. Some roles you might consider:

3.1 Coordinator. It is easy in a group project to neglect to do something because everyone thought someone else was going to do it. For this reason it is useful to choose someone to be your coordinator. This person should help organize meetings and bring all the information together into a coherent whole. They should make sure that everything that needs to be done is done and done on time.

3.2 Internet Researcher. One person at least should search the Internet (using World Wide Web) to find on-line resources in your field.

3.3 Library Researcher. One person could search the Library for journal articles and books on the use of computers in the chosen field.

3.4 Interviewer. One person in your group might make appointments with people in the field using computers and interview them as to how they think the field can use computers.

3.5 Editor. One person could be responsible for editing all the parts written by others so that the whole is coherent and clear. This person should feel comfortable with HTML so that they can make sure the document is looks the way you expect it to when read on the Web.

Self Evaluation Form

This form is for each individual in your group to fill out privately. This allows you to comment on your participation and that of the others in your group. Please return this personally to your instructor.
